How to Keep You and Movers Safe During the Move

Whether you decide to pack everything up on your own and rent a truck, or hire a company to help you with your household moving needs, safety should always be one of your top concerns. The following are some great tips that should keep you and everyone else involved in your move safe from harm.

Inspect Both Properties

Look at your current home and look for any hazards that might be there. These include things such as broken steps, cracked concrete, hoses, and similar items. Things such as these could cause people to trip, which could cause injury as well as damage to your items. Do the same inspection on your new property as well. Make sure you remove the hazards or make everyone aware of them in the case of things you can’t fix, such as a chipped sidewalk. You may even want to mark those hazards to remind your family, friends, or movers about them.

Keep the Weight Down

When many people pack boxes, they load them to the brim, filling them up entirely. They do not bother to think about the weight. If the boxes are too heavy, it will be difficult to move them. Someone could pull a muscle or injure their back as well. You should instruct anyone who is packing boxes to keep the weight under 50 pounds at most. This makes them easier to carry. If you have stairs, it may be a good idea to lower the weight even more, keeping them to around 30 pounds.

Dress Right

If you choose professional movers, they already know how to dress for the occasion of moving – they do it every day! However, your friends and family that might be helping with the move do not always know what to wear. Wearing clothes that fit properly and that are comfortable is important. Clothes that are too tight will restrict movement. Clothes that are too loose could become a hazard if they snag on something. Good shoes that have quality tread are important too. Stay away from slippers and flip-flops when moving.

Animals and Children

While you love them both, they both have a tendency to be underfoot during these times. If you can, have someone babysit the kids and the animals when you are moving. It will keep them out of the way of the movers. This way, neither your pets nor your children will be at risk of an injury. In addition, it means the movers and your friends will not be in danger if you have a dog that might be aggressive when people try to move items out of the house.

Hydrate and Eat

Moving can be hard work, and chances are you will sweat quite a bit. Make sure you have plenty of water on hand at your old property and your new home so everyone is nice and hydrated. Have some snacks available as well. This keeps up people’s energy and it keeps them ready to work!
